Cypress Mulch & Jungle Substrates

Cypress mulch is a popular choice of substrate. We also have forest floor style mulch available.

Cypress trees are usually found in more humid climates so using cypress mulch in a terrarium that needs a more humid climate makes sense.  This medium works well for pets that are natural burrowers or like to dig.

While the cypress mulch can be used in dry, humid or wet environments it is particularly recommended for high humidity terrariums.  Because cypress is a natural substance it is a one hundred percent organic renewable resource. Cypru

When using the cypress mulch in the habitat use as much as is needed for the required depth.  Professionals that are experienced in caring for reptiles and amphibians will be able to instruct users on the appropriate depth.

The cypress mulch should be spot cleaned on a daily basis.  The old cypress mulch should be removed and replaced with fresh mulch.  The entire bedding material needs to be replaced at least once a month or more if it is required.

If using the cypress mulch in a very humid, hot atmosphere it may need to be changed frequently.  Dry conditions in the terrarium will probably see less need for frequent replacement.  Make sure that any soiled cypress mulch is disposed of properly.  Cypress mulch can be purchased in six litre packages for a reasonable price.

Moss often grows on the jungle floors so choosing a jungle substrate for the terrarium could include moss.  There are several types of moss that will work in a jungle substrate environment.  These include forest moss, dry vivarium moss, sphagnum moss, and terrarium moss.

A forest moss usually comes from tropical Asia in a compressed form.  If more humidity is needed in the terrarium the forest moss is a good choice.  It works well for salamanders, frogs or burrowing and digging animals.  This medium is ideal for use in a snake cave or reptile cave because it is very absorbent.  It can be used for egg laying or incubation as well.

Vivarium moss is used as a decoration and as a substrate for a jungle environment.  This type of moss can be soaked in water so that it will produce large amounts of humidity.  Soaking also keeps the moss fresh and green.

Another great jungle substrate is the sphagnum moss.  This high quality product is pressed into bricks for easy shipping and storage.  Since it is shipped dry it must be put in water before it can be used.  A container that allows for an expansion of five litres is necessary for the sphagnum moss.  This moss can be used for humidity in the terrarium and hiding boxes for reptiles.  If a multi box is used the sphagnum moss substrate can be used as a subsoil for orchids and other decorative plants.

The terrarium moss jungle substrate is a natural product with no chemicals or dyes.  If it is placed in the water dish or around it, it will prevent accidental drowning of the reptiles while providing an easy way for them to get the water they need to survive.
