Coconut Chips

Coconut chips make an attractive option for your reptile tank.

Tropical lizards, tortoises and snakes will all like the coconut bark chips in their terrarium. They provide a natural substrate that will absorb water and will make the terrarium more humid. This substrate looks great in the terrarium for long periods of time so it doesn’t have to be changed as often.  It not only retains the way it looks, however; it also retains its absorbent quality as well.

When ordering coconut bark chips they come in the form of a brick.  The coconut bark chips have been pressed together to make this substrate easy to ship and use.  Before placing the coconut bark chips substrate in the terrarium it must be moistened.  You will need a bucket or other container that can hold up to five litres of substrate.  The water should be warm so that the brick can swell to the appropriate volume. The coconut bark chips are natural with no pesticides, fertilizers or chemicals.  This means it is very safe to use as a substrate for your reptile.  Since no foreign substances are introduced into the coconut bark chips substrate it is one hundred percent biodegradable.

Another product that is ideal for a terrarium where reptiles, tortoises, snakes or Komodo dragons are living is the coconut terrain.  These coconut chips can be used in a wet or dry environment.  They don’t require soaking before using like the coconut bark chips do.
The coconut terrain chips are again one hundred percent natural and biodegradable.  Should the reptile, tortoise or snake ingest some of the coconut terrain chips they will not be harmed. If the coconut terrain chips are not terribly soiled it can be used for up to a month.  However, soiled coconut terrain chips should be changed right away if it gets dirty. Using the coconut chips in a humid terrarium will mean that they will need to be changed more often than if they are used in a dry climate terrarium.   One of the benefits of using the coconut terrain chips is that they can go in a terrarium that needs dry, humid or wet climatic conditions.
Make sure when putting the coconut terrain chips in the terrarium that it meets the required depth for the reptile, tortoise or snake.  Items such as a humidity gauge and spray bottles can be used to make sure that the conditions inside the terrarium are ideal for the pet.

Coconut husks are another variety of coconut chips.  The coco husk chips are made from the husks of the coconut tree.  The chips are generally made from tropical Asian trees where they compress the coconut husk and make the chips. This substrate is ecologically safe as it is made from a natural product.  It will help to increase the humidity in a terrarium.  This substrate is perfect for salamanders, frogs and other animals that may dig holes or burrow.

Both the coconut bark chips and the coconut terrain chips are ideal for use in a natural environment terrarium.  The cost and ease of use of these products make them a great choice.
