Larger reptiles like snakes tend to eat live food in order to get the nutrients they need out of the meal. As you know with most reptiles you do not have to feed them every day depending on the meal they receive, especially with snakes. Black crickets as a meal survive better in cooler temperatures, travel more easily, and tend to be slower moving. This makes a great meal for reptiles that do not move very quickly.

Live Reptile Food

The Silent Brown Crickets for live food are named because they do not chirp very often. They are better in a warmer environment, and quicker on their feet than the black crickets. For reptiles that need a warmer cage you may find the brown cricket is better served.

Mealworms and Superworms are beetle larvae. Mealworms have a tough outer shell, which can be difficult to digest for some species of reptiles. Turtles tend to eat worms like the mealworms or superworms. Super worms have a softer exoskeleton, which means they are easier to eat and digest.

Locusts and other hopping food are perfect for such animals as the bearded dragon. Locusts such as the desert or migratory locust are typically the species used for food. Adults have wings, while the juveniles do not. At the juvenile stage locusts are known as hoppers.

Waxworms are another worm option. They become moths eventually, but in the larvae stage they are caterpillars with a soft skeleton so they are easy to digest for most reptiles and amphibian pets. Waxworms are more of a treat for your pet reptile because they have a high fat content. They are best for snacks or reptiles that are underweight.

Lastly for live foods you have the flightless fruit fly. They do not fly, but these insects still have wings. They tend to walk and climb around an enclosure. For this very reason the fruit fly is great for hatchlings and amphibians like the dart frogs.

When feeding your pet live food a good rule of thumb in choosing the food is to estimate the distance between their eyes. In other words if your lizard has 1cm between the eyes you should feed them live food that size. Of course many reptiles can eat larger food as well. You just want to avoid internal blockage.
