Reptile Herbivore Foods

Reptiles are either herbivores or omnivores.  We have a great range of reptile food including this specialist herbivore food section. Herbivores are only going to eat plants, vegetables, and fruits.  They do not eat insects or live animals.  To be more specific herbivores will eat algae, fungi, bacteria, protists and even parasitic plants.  Herbivores can get enough nutrients from the plants and other debris they eat based on the process of photosynthesis.  Photosynthesis helps the plant turn green and live healthy.  In this process nutrients that reptiles and other herbivores need are generated and kept in the leaves or branches.  Often herbivores eat a lot of fibrous materials.  Herbivores tend to be grazers, meaning they continuously eat by moving around the land they live on to find food.  Herbivores tend to consume a lot of food to help maintain their life.

For your herbivore pet reptile you have two feeding options.  You can feed your reptile live plants.  If you feed them live plants you have to ensure the plants you introduce are not poisonous to your pet and that they will actually eat the plant.  Live plants are difficult to maintain when using them as food or decorations.

Many pet reptile owners prefer the second option for feeding their herbivore reptiles, which are herbivore dry food products.  Herbivore food products have been through a drying process in which the leaves or other materials used for the food are dried out, chopped up, and then mixed together before being placed in the food container.  The food container is then sealed to keep the freshness of the fruits, vegetables, and plants.  Dry food can also be cooked into pellets after the drying and chopping process.
Aquarium reptiles will require the flake dry food products for herbivores.  This flake material will float into the tank.  The reptile can then swim up to get it or wait for it to float to the bottom where they are resting.  The flakes have a high content of nutrients for aquatic animals.  The pellets are heavier, so they float instantly to the bottom, but pellets may not be a preferred aquatic reptile food therefore creating debris in the tank.

Research what types of food your pet reptile will eat and try the pellets and flakes to see what your pet enjoys more.  The Herbivore dry food products come in a number of different options.  You have many manufacturers creating different flavours, as well as different nutritious food.  A terrarium kept reptile can have a food dish filled with the herbivore dry food products.

You will not have to have a feeding schedule in a terrarium with dry food.  You can allow the reptile to eat when they are hungry.  Along with the herbivore dry food products are treats.  Reptile treats are a nice option to feed your reptile every so often.  Treats should not be a main source of food, nor should they be offered each day.  Treats while healthy are not the most nutritious thus they cannot supplement for a regular meal for your pet reptile.
