Reptile Books & Guides
Understanding your reptile is imperative. You need to know if they have moods, what can stress them out, and the proper care. There are a number of different reptile species you can keep as a pet. For this reason there are several reptile books you may find in this section. These books will be broken down into the type of reptile the book is about to better help you find what you are looking for.
As with most nonfiction books you have two styles of book. You have a guide which explains things in a step by step format, mostly about the reptile’s habitat, specifics about the species, and what they eat. These guides tend to be all inclusive with reptile care, housing information, how to set up your reptile environment, etc.
Some guides you might encounter would be amphibians, snakes, and lizards. The reptile books can get even more specific. You may find under snakes that books on milk snakes, pythons, and garden snakes exist. These books narrow the field of focus down from the all inclusive reptile guide books. In this case you still have all the information you want to know, but it is regarding one species of reptile over the hundreds you could have as a pet. These more specific books tend to have the details you are looking for.
The second option you have when it comes to reptile books is the reptile care books. Care guides are specific, and may not always be inclusive. Typically in a care guide you learn about the habitat you should create for your pet. You also learn what your pet will eat, when they need to eat, and how much water they drink in a day. Another section may be on cleaning the vivarium you keep your pet reptile in.
Sections in reptile care books also discuss health of your pet. It will tell you what may stress the pet, what behaviour they have when stressed, and how to tell if they are ill. These care guides tend to be more specific on health information than the overview guides explained above. Books also look at when you may need to take your reptile to a vet. Vet visits for pets tend to be yearly unless you suspect something is wrong. The same is necessary for a pet reptile.
There is a third style of book you can pick up that is a guide also. This guide overviews the different species of pet reptiles you can obtain. It will tell you what pets may be better suited for your lifestyle. For example, if you go on business trips a hardier pet reptile may be necessary, one that may not stress when you are gone. There are also reptiles that make better pets for children. They are easier to take care for your child. These guide books examine all these aspects of what you need to know to help you take the proper care of your pet and supply the necessary equipment.
