There are different ways to obtain a vivarium for your pet reptile. You may have an old tank you used in years past, you may have bought one used, built your own, or purchased a new one.
Reptile Tank Sealant
At times you may be required to seal the tank again. Any tank built by a manufacturer will have a seal to make it water tight, even in wood terrariums.
However, over time this sealant can begin to decay and you may find the tank or aquarium has sprung a leak. It could also be that the tank was damaged in some way on the glass panel and you want to ensure it is watertight.
Reptile tank and vivarium sealant can help you seal the joints in a wood or metal terrarium. The sealant is designed to form a watertight rubber seal. This rubber is harmless to fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Your pet will not attempt to eat it and it will not degrade into the water or tank.
The benefits of reptile sealant are as follows:
• You have a tube the sealant is kept in, which allows you one tool that makes it easy to apply the mixture.
• It is also great for glass, so you will not have to worry about it coming off.
• It is fast tack and will have a short cure time. Some sealants can take days to dry, but reptile vivarium sealants are designed to dry quickly in case you need to get your pets back in the tank.
• As soon as the sealant is fully cured you can put the fish and reptiles back in the tank. It will then be completely safe for them to be around.
• At any time you need a gasket you can use the sealant to form that gasket. It will still allow the air flow or any other flow into or out of the tank, but it will provide the gasket needed.
• The sealant also has a high gloss finish, which means it turns clear and will look like glass and the water in the tank. Others will never know you used the sealant.
With the fast dry time you should still leave the tank to sit overnight if possible. It will help to ventilate the tank. The sealant is a chemical meaning it has a pretty powerful smell. Even after it dries you want to get that scent out of the tank before you place your fish and reptiles back in it.
The sealant comes in a tube, where you just cut the end off to the size you need it to be. Basically for sealing a broken area or running it along the edge it should be wider than the crevice to ensure full protection.
There are a few types of sealant sold on the market. Geocel is one vivarium and tank sealant. The sealant needs to be recapped to store it properly, but it has a specific shelf life.
