Locks

Reptiles are known for being clever and inventive creatures. The fact that most reptiles can reduce their body size to fit through small holes adds to their intelligence. When you own a pet reptile and a vivarium or tank you may need a tank or vivarium lock.

Reptile Vivarium Security & Locks

Some aquariums you purchase will have a secure lid that locks in place.  However, most vivariums and terrariums do not have a secure lid.  They either sit on top of the tank or have doors.  Any vivarium with two glass doors will need to have a tank lock to avoid losing your pet reptile.  It is especially important to have tank locks when you have a more dangerous reptile.
Luckily you have plenty of options when it comes to vivarium locks.  There are three types of locks you can choose from.  The first lock is your standard padlock with key.  The padlock will have a metal loop that goes into the large metal part where the key is inserted.  It locks easy and you are not required to remember a combination.  However, you do have to store the key in a place you will not lose it.  This could be in the bottom of the terrarium cabinet on a hook with a keychain.  These types of locks are generally square and can handle doors, where the handles are close together.
Some vivarium tanks have sliding doors where there are no handles.  In other words it is a glass panel with an inset handle rather than a metal handle to pull on.  A sliding door is not going to use a padlock.  For this type of cabinet you would need the second type of lock.  The second tank lock is a metal slide bar in which the keyed lock will slide along the metal bar.  It can be placed on a glass sliding door or other style vivarium.  You simply slide the lock along the metal section to open or close it, then turn the key to lock it in place.  Many people favour this style lock for its simplicity and ease of use with most doors.
The last reptile vivarium locks to choose from are the combination locks.  There are two styles to the combination lock.  You have one with a dial that you spin or with numbers you move into place.  The number combination lock is often easier than the dial.  Either style will be similar in size and usability as the padlock.  It will be used with vivariums that have glass doors with handles or where you can loop it through two objects to keep the doors shut.  The metal bar will be locked into the combination section of the lock.
Whether you purchase the padlock, combination lock or slide lock you know your reptiles will remain in their cage unable to get out.  You can feel safe that your pet will remain safe and happy inside.  The locks can also be used to protect any items you store in the cabinet section of the terrarium.
